De Luwte Amsterdam: a hidden gem of a restaurant near the Jordaan

De Luwte Amsterdam for a romantic culinary evening!

Are you familiar with De Luwte restaurant in Amsterdam's Jordaan district? It's that cozy restaurant next to the Brandon that you've probably passed a hundred times, always thinking, "I have to eat there sometime." De Luwte has been around since 1986, but a few years ago, this charming neighborhood restaurant in the Jordaan district underwent a complete renovation. What started with some minor adjustments ended with a completely new restaurant concept, and owner Iris recently overhauled the interior. De Luwte is a gastrobar and a staple on my list of restaurants I always return to. The benches are made from reclaimed wooden floors from the early Luwte period, but with the sleek bar and paneled wall, this restaurant wouldn't look out of place in Nolita, New York. The interior is warm and inviting, with different ambiances in the two sections of the restaurant. If you're dining with friends, it's a great idea to reserve one of the semi-circular booths overlooking the open kitchen. If you're with just the two of you, ask for a table by the window, where you can enjoy people-watching on the canals.

I recently had another extensive dinner at De Luwte to sample the new menu. And although I've been coming here regularly for over two years, this is without a doubt the most delicious menu so far. I'm really enjoying seeing how the team at De Luwte continues to grow in the culinary field. A concept that truly evolves over the years based on authenticity, becoming even better at what it does.
We started the evening off nicely with a cocktail. Ever since our trip to New York for Christmas a few years ago (and actually long before that, haha), I've been a fan of dinner cocktails ;-). I love it, and it's so festive... like you always have something to celebrate! The service at De Luwte in Amsterdam is super friendly and knows exactly what they're talking about. Iris, the owner, is a true entrepreneur. Besides De Luwte, she also has Ree7 en pick in Reestraat. So inspiring!

The new menu of De Luwte It's packed with delicious dishes, and it's good to know that vegetarians are also well catered for. The new menu features two vegetarian main courses and one main course, such as a creamy fennel soup and pappardelle with pumpkin and chestnut mushrooms, among other things. The classic Tomahawk steak, which I'll tell you more about later, is still on the menu. For main courses, the new winter menu includes, for example, beef and scallop tartare, which has become a classic at De Luwte. New additions include the crayfish tartlet and the vegetarian mushroom mousse with sweet potato. The main courses are equally delicious, and unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to try them all yet. I can, however, say that the Surf 'N Turf is truly delicious! And the next time I go back to De Luwte, I already know what I'm going to order: the rack of venison.

The Tomahawk Steak

De Luwte in Amsterdam has one dish on its menu that's absolutely a signature dish: the Tomahawk steak, weighing a whopping 850 grams. WOW! If you're a true meat lover like me, you absolutely have to try this. The meat is super flavorful and tender, and you get a large knife to carve it yourself at the table. The Tomahawk steak is perfect for sharing with your dinner date! Ask the waitstaff for a delicious wine pairing. The wine list also changes regularly, and the waitresses are happy to recommend it.

My partner and I always share desserts, because I'm not a huge sweet tooth myself, but I can't resist trying a little bit of everything ;-). The "kletskop" (sweet tart) from the new menu is highly recommended, and the cheese board is always a hit!

I'd love to go to De Luwte every week because the atmosphere is simply fantastic, and they stay true to their concept. If you're looking for something fun after dinner, you can go to Brandon for drinks. In the summer, De Luwte has a fantastic terrace on the canal. As soon as the first rays of sunshine appear, it's a wonderful place for dinner.
