Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful destinations for anyone who loves nature. Here, you can plan a beautiful and incredibly diverse itinerary that offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. From stunning hikes to wildlife encounters and luxury hotels. We found Costa Rica to be an incredibly pleasant and safe destination to explore on a self-drive road trip. Tip: book your rental car and accommodations in advance to get the best prices, as Costa Rica is a popular destination – especially during peak season.

Costa Rica Itinerary: 18 Days
Which route would I recommend based on my own trip in Costa Rica to ensure you experience all the different landscapes and wildlife? I’ve mapped it out just like we did during our world trip! Depending on the number of days you want for your trip, you can, for example, add days to the beach, stay a night in Tamarindo, or add a day to a destination where you want to do an excursion that lasts a whole day.
When arriving in Costa Rica and leaving, be sure to plan for one night in San José. This way, you can acclimate, pick up your rental car, and make sure you don’t miss your flight home.
- San José – 1 night
- Puerto Viejo – 3 nights
- Tortuguero – 3 nights
- Arenal / La Fortuna – 3 nights
- Monteverde – 3 nights
- Santa Teresa – 3 nights
- San José – 1 night
Make sure to book your accommodation in Tortuguero in advance so you can follow the itinerary as described above. During our trip, we had to book Tortuguero at the end because we were just too late.
| TIP: Keep in mind that in the more remote areas of Costa Rica, there are many unpaved roads. Therefore, rent a good 4×4 car and remember that the distance doesn’t always reflect the travel time. Also, check that the navigation directs you only over accessible (main) roads and not through a valley, even if it seems like a shorter route initially. I can tell you from experience ;-).

Puerto Viejo // Costa Rica Itinerary
Puerto Viejo is a gem on the Caribbean coast, with relaxed vibes and tropical beaches. After seeing more of Costa Rica, you’ll realize it’s a unique destination that showcases the diversity of the country. In Puerto Viejo, you’ll find it all! It’s the perfect place to start your road trip in a relaxed way. The combination of beach and rainforest, great restaurants, and Caribbean vibes will get you straight into vacation mode!
Where to Stay in Puerto Viejo:
- Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel: This bohemian-chic hotel has a lovely pool, a great restaurant, and luxurious suites. The beachfront location near Playa Cocles is perfect too!
- Aguas Claras Hotel: If you, like me, love hotels with beautiful interiors, this luxury eco-boutique hotel is for you, with a lovely pool and restaurant. You’ll stay in beautiful, colorful bungalows, some with their own verandas where you can relax. The beach is just a short walk away from the hotel.
- Terrazas del Caribe Hotel: During our world trip, we stayed here, and this hotel is a great choice for families. The apartments are spacious, with a kitchen and a large living area. Perfect for making breakfast or cooking for the kids. The hotel also has a nice pool and restaurant, but the best part is the location right in the jungle. From our terrace, we could watch macaws and toucans fly by!

Things to Do and See in Puerto Viejo:
We found Puerto Viejo to be the perfect destination to start our road trip through Costa Rica. There is so much to see and do, but it’s also a great place to relax and get used to the time difference. Beaches, nature, wildlife… it’s beautiful!
Cahuita National Park
This was one of the most beautiful national parks I visited. The jungle that stretches all the way to the beach is really special to see. There are several beautiful hikes you can take, and you’ll likely encounter curious raccoons. If the weather is good, you can also snorkel here, so be sure to bring your swimming gear!
Jaguar Rescue Center
If you’re traveling with kids, a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center is a must. Here, rescued animals like sloths, monkeys, and toucans are cared for. You can only visit the center with a guided tour, so it’s a good idea to book tickets online in advance. Good to know: there are no jaguars at the center, despite what the name may suggest.
Caribeans Chocolate Tour
Costa Rica makes amazing chocolate! Want to learn more about it and take a lovely walk through the jungle? Then join the tour at the Caribeans Chocolate & Coffee farm. We saw lots of animals along the way, which made the uphill walk really worth it. On this tour, you’ll learn all about the process from cocoa bean to chocolate. And of course, there’s plenty of tasting!
Bike Ride Along the Beaches
At most hotels, you can rent bikes to explore the coastline near Puerto Viejo. Unfortunately, we had too much rain to do this, but I had already mapped out the route, so we did it by car instead. From Playa Cocles, for example, you can bike all the way to Playa Punta Uva. Along the way, you can stop to swim, have a nice lunch, and make sure you’re back before dark.

Restaurant Tips in Puerto Viejo:
The majority of restaurants in Puerto Viejo are located in the town or along the coastline. You can find food from all over the world here. These are my favorite spots:
KOKi Beach
A trendy restaurant in the town with a tropical vibe, where you can enjoy fresh ceviche and creative cocktails. This is the spot for great food and beautiful sunsets!
Bread and Chocolate
This spot is a must for breakfast or lunch. They serve the best chocolate pancakes, and they have freshly baked bread. It’s also perfect if you’re craving good coffee.
Tasty Waves Cantina
Craving tacos? Then you can’t miss this surfer’s spot. They often have live music on the weekends, creating a fun atmosphere. This laid-back place is also great for a drink with snacks.
Le Cameleon Beach Club
This beach club has a great look but still maintains a laid-back vibe. A nice place (a bit more expensive) to go when you’re in the mood for something different than a local eatery. On the menu, you’ll find freshly caught fish, tropical cocktails, and international dishes. The view of Playa Cocles is lovely, making it perfect for lunch, dinner, or just a sunset drink in one of the lounge chairs.
Spicy Coconut
This creative restaurant is one of the best hotspots along the coast. They have a concept store, and you can enjoy delicious food. Everything is homemade, and you can taste it! Local ingredients mixed with international preparations. Very tasty and not to be missed!

Tortuguero // Costa Rica Itinerary
The Tortuguero National Park is a fascinating maze of canals, lagoons, and tropical rainforest on the Caribbean coast. A paradise for nature and bird lovers. We saw some amazing things here! From spotting turtles to serene kayaking trips through the canals. This place in Costa Rica is only accessible by boat, and most lodges have their own boats that you can book for the transfer. You can leave your car at the parking lot where the boats depart. You can also visit Tortuguero in two nights, but we enjoyed an extra night to have a day without excursions and just relax in this beautiful place.
Where to Stay in Tortuguero:
- Mawamba Lodge: This is the lodge where we stayed during our trip. Enjoy a peaceful environment with views of the canals, a pool to relax in, and several restaurants. What I liked about this lodge is that you can walk to the village along the beach.
- Manatus: This jungle hideaway has spacious rooms with air conditioning (a rarity in Tortuguero!), a pool, and a good restaurant. Like almost all other hotels in Tortuguero, you can book excursions directly at the hotel.
- Tortuga Lodge & Gardens: This is one of the more luxurious options in Tortuguero. Want to wake up to the sound of the river and chirping birds? Tortuga Lodge & Gardens is the perfect place for you. What else to expect? A beautiful infinity pool with views of the jungle, stylish rooms, and a restaurant offering both local and international dishes.

Things to Do and See in Tortuguero:
Since the park is only accessible by boat, you should be prepared for quite a bit of travel time. Trust me, it’s totally worth it! On the day of arrival, I recommend relaxing by the pool, taking a beach walk, and exploring the hotel. Maybe there’s an evening jungle walk? Or perhaps you can still catch a boat tour at the end of the afternoon? Book all your excursions as soon as you arrive at the lodge, as they often fill up quickly.
Kayaking or Boat Safari Through the Canals
Early in the morning, nature is at its best. Paddle through the quiet canals and spot monkeys, toucans, caimans, and more. You can book an organized kayak tour, but most hotels also offer kayaks. Prefer not to kayak yourself? You can also take a boat safari in the morning or afternoon. Or do both, like I did, which I highly recommend.
Visit the Village of Tortuguero
Although this village is tiny and there’s not much to do, I think it’s worth spending a few hours there when you’re at Tortuguero National Park. Here, you’ll see a bit of the daily life of the friendly locals. Expect colorful houses, Caribbean vibes, street art, and many little restaurants by the water. This is also the place to shop for handmade souvenirs and support local businesses.
Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitor’s Center
Learn more about the importance of turtle conservation and the efforts being made here. It’s a small center, but a nice visit, especially if you’re outside of turtle season. You can also adopt a turtle here to support the conservation efforts. Good to know: there are no live turtles at the center.
Night Walk
End your day in Tortuguero with an exciting walk through the jungle in the dark. Discover the nightlife of the rainforest and listen to the unique sounds of nature. Most hotels organize evening walks like this. We didn’t do this ourselves as we’ve done it at other places, but there are often also morning walks to spot birds, which is also a lot of fun!
Turtle Spotting (July to October)
If you’re traveling during the season, this is an unforgettable experience. Go with a guide to the beach and watch the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.

Restaurant Tips in Tortuguero:
Most hotels offer half board, including dinner since the hotels are quite remote. So, it’s nice to visit the village during the day to get a taste of the Caribbean vibe there. Here are some restaurants in Tortuguero worth checking out:
El Patio
With a beautiful view of the canals, you can enjoy fresh fish dishes here and soak in all the impressions in the terrace garden. We had a great time here!
Soda D’Leite
Try the Costa Rican cuisine, such as rice and beans with fresh seafood, at this local restaurant in the village.
Kame Sushi
Sushi in the jungle? You’ll go here for surprisingly good sushi. A tip if you’re craving something different from the local cuisine.
Buddha Café
Enjoy a hearty breakfast, lunch, or dinner with a view of the water. They serve more international dishes and refreshing fresh juices.
Good to Know When Visiting Tortuguero:
- Plan your stay around the turtle season from July to October if possible. This offers a unique chance to see these giant creatures up close. Unfortunately, we missed this, but even without turtles, Tortuguero is still well worth it, in my opinion.
- Make sure to bring good rain gear! A poncho is really a must in Tortuguero, no matter the season. The showers are often short but intense. Tip: Also make sure to protect your camera gear and phone well.

Arenal & La Fortuna // Costa Rica Itinerary
The Arenal region is the destination in Costa Rica where adrenaline and relaxation go hand in hand. This is where you go for a volcanic landscape with natural hot springs and days full of adventure in the jungle. From waterfalls to hanging bridges and wellness; you’ll find it all here. La Fortuna is a great base, but there are also beautiful, more remote accommodations. In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know.
Where to Stay in La Fortuna and Surroundings:
- Arenal Manoa Hotel & Hot Springs: This lovely hotel combines luxury and nature. Stay in one of the private bungalows, surrounded by lush gardens, and wake up with views of the impressive Arenal Volcano. This hotel has its own hot springs, so after a day of adventure in nature, you can relax there.
- Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa: If you’re mostly looking to relax in La Fortuna and plan to spend a lot of time at your hotel, then the iconic Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, with its own natural thermal baths heated by the Arenal volcano, is highly recommended. This hotel also has a wonderful spa where you can book a variety of treatments.
- Finca Luna Nueva Lodge: This eco-lodge feels like a hidden gem in the jungle! It’s a bit further from La Fortuna, but since you’ll need to drive everywhere, it’s not an issue. This hotel is perfect for families, but also offers a unique experience for couples. Sustainability and connection with nature are central to this finca. One of the fun things you can do on-site is take a walk with the gardener, who shares all kinds of interesting facts about the unique plants. Highly recommended! Additionally, there’s a great farm-to-table restaurant, a nice bar to enjoy a drink, and a wonderful pool.

Things to Do and See in La Fortuna and Surroundings:
You can easily spend two or three nights in the La Fortuna area. It’s a popular destination because it’s easily accessible from San José. Are there any activities you definitely want to do? Book them in advance to avoid missing out. Good to know: keep in mind that you probably won’t see the Arenal volcano for most of the day.
Wellness & Hot Springs
Take a day of wellness and visit one of the natural hot springs, like Tabacón Hot Springs or EcoTermales. It’s wonderfully relaxing to soak in the warm water!
La Fortuna Waterfall
A visit to the La Fortuna Waterfall is a must. The hike is short but steep, with a staircase path. Once at the bottom, you can take a refreshing dip in the water. Tip: go early, as it can get quite busy.
Mistico Hanging Bridges
Walk across the Mistico Hanging Bridges, a network of bridges through the jungle, and enjoy panoramic views.
Sky Park Adventures
At Sky Park Adventures, you can experience various adventures for all ages, so we went there with our son. Start with a drink at the Chillout restaurant with views of the volcano. Take a cable car to a viewpoint and zipline through the jungle down below. Or enjoy a scenic walk over various hanging bridges. It’s all possible here!

Dining and Drinking Tips in La Fortuna:
If, like me, you’re a fan of good food, La Fortuna is the place for you. The restaurant scene here is great, with plenty of choices depending on your budget. Here are the favorites we dined at during our stay in La Fortuna:
Don Rufino
This modern restaurant in the center of La Fortuna is one of the best in the area. The menu includes dishes like ceviche and perfectly prepared steak. Order a cocktail to go with your meal because they make them the best here!
Spectacular Cantina
If you’re craving Mexican vibes and colorful dishes, head to Spectacular Cantina. This taco restaurant is the place for the best tacos in La Fortuna. Classic flavors, local ingredients, and homemade hot sauces that you’ll want to try all of them.
La Street Bistro
La Street Bistro’s menu features fusion dishes, making this restaurant with a hip and colorful interior a real crowd-pleaser. International dishes are combined with Costa Rican influences and a creative twist. It’s the kind of place you’ll return to multiple times, and it’s also great for kids.
Monteverde // Costa Rica Itinerary
Monteverde is known for its beautiful cloud forests and is a paradise for nature lovers. Here, you literally walk through the clouds, surrounded by pristine nature with an incredible amount of biodiversity. From colorful hummingbirds to hikes across hanging bridges, we thoroughly enjoyed everything Monteverde has to offer. Add to that the beautiful hotels, and you have all the ingredients for a few days of unwinding in nature, but with a touch of eco-luxury.
Where to Stay in Monteverde:
- Monteverde Lodge & Gardens: This hotel feels like it’s in the middle of nature but is also close to the town. A lovely place where we stayed in a comfortable family room. We were also very pleased with our choice because of the great restaurant (which also has a kids’ menu) with an extensive wine list. The lodge is set in lush gardens full of butterflies, birds, and other small animals. Everything here is well taken care of, from the pool where you can also order drinks to the child’s bathrobe hanging in the room for Manuel.
- Hotel Belmar: Eco-luxury at its best! Think: rustic wooden rooms with a balcony, a farm-to-table restaurant, and a spa with views over the cloud forests. This hotel is perfect for couples and a romantic jungle stay, but done in style. We only went there for dinner, but I would definitely check in here on a future trip.
- Senda Monteverde Hotel: Many hotels in Costa Rica focus on sustainability, and this beautiful boutique hotel, surrounded by pristine nature, is no exception. Perfect for those seeking complete peace and quiet after a day of exploring.

Things to Do and See in Monteverde:
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
This magical cloud forest is a haven for birdwatchers. Here, you have a chance to spot the elusive quetzal. Normally, I’m not always in favor of guided tours, but in these forests, I highly recommend it. The guides know the nature best and can spot things that you wouldn’t see on your own. We saw the most beautiful birds and learned about the unique plants.
Treetopia Hanging Bridges & Zipline
If you didn’t do this in the La Fortuna area, you can also walk among the treetops at Treetopia in Monteverde, where there’s a network of hanging bridges. We’ve done this at several places, and it’s always a unique experience!
During my first trip to Costa Rica, I went ziplining for the first time in my life. What an adrenaline rush! You can do this at several locations in Costa Rica, and it’s definitely fun for older kids. Since our son was still too young this time, we skipped it, but it’s definitely something to look forward to for next time!
Hummingbird Gallery
It’s a bit quaint, but that’s what makes it so charming. I was here nearly 20 years ago for the first time, and not much has changed since. The Hummingbird Gallery is a small café at the edge of the rainforest. On the terrace, there’s food for the hummingbirds, and they come in large numbers to feast. It’s amazing to see these swift creatures with brightly colored feathers and unique beaks up close. I’d say, keep your camera handy! Afterward, you can have a coffee and a treat at the café, and who knows, you might even spot a kinkajou on the path back, just like we did.

Dining and Drinking Tips in Monteverde:
San Lucas Treetop Dining
Imagine this: a 7-course menu among the treetops with panoramic views. At San Lucas, you dine in your own private treehouse with a culinary menu featuring local ingredients and flavors. Perfect for a romantic dinner.
Morpho’s Restaurant
This restaurant is an icon in Monteverde. It’s very touristy, but that doesn’t make it any less fun. It’s especially great for kids because the restaurant is built around a giant tree. They serve local dishes with a creative twist, but you can also get a classic burger. Tip: For a similar setting, you can also check out Tree House Restaurante.
Taco Taco Monteverde
I don’t know how many tacos we ate during our trip through Costa Rica, but I can assure you it was a lot. And honestly? I will never get tired of it! So diverse and always a surprise, especially with the local ingredients. In Monteverde, Taco Taco serves the best tacos. A colorful little place with a nice terrace.
Celajes Restaurant (at Hotel Belmar)
If your budget doesn’t stretch to staying at Hotel Belmar, go for lunch, dinner, or a cocktail during sunset. This farm-to-table restaurant only serves dishes made with locally produced, seasonal ingredients. Pure flavors in a beautiful setting with views over the valley. Magical!
The Open Kitchen
One of the spots we visited multiple times during our stay in Monteverde was the hotspot The Open Kitchen. Homemade cakes, pies, and lemonades that are irresistible. It’s also the place for great iced lattes and a tasty lunch menu with Mediterranean dishes. Think freshly baked pitas, colorful salads, and crispy falafel, all homemade and made with local ingredients.
Good to Know:
- Monteverde is cooler than most places in Costa Rica. Long pants are not a bad idea. Also, bring a warm sweater, waterproof jacket, and sturdy shoes.
- The roads to Monteverde are bumpy and not always paved. A 4×4 should have no problem, but make sure you stick to the main roads before you have to drive through a river to reach your hotel. I speak from experience ;-)!

Santa Teresa Beach // Costa Rica Itinerary
It’s a bit of a drive, but when you get there, you truly feel like you’ve arrived at a remote hidden gem. Santa Teresa is a bohemian beach destination on the Nicoya Peninsula with a lovely laid-back vibe. It somewhat resembles Tulum and Canggu from years ago. You go here for jungle hotels, relaxation, trendy restaurants, and vast beaches on the Pacific coast with stunning sunsets. Love surfing or yoga? This is the place for you! Tip: The roads in Santa Teresa are unpaved, so if you’re heading somewhere, check if your car is suitable for the route. To reach some hotels and villas in the hills, a 4×4 is needed. If you have extra days in your itinerary, I recommend spending a night in Tamarindo, like we did!
Where to Stay in Santa Teresa Beach:
- Esencia Hotel & Villas, Santa Teresa: If you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel within walking distance of the beach and fun restaurants, this is a great choice. It’s not super luxurious, but it’s a small boutique hotel run by locals with a lovely pool. The rooms are set up as private villas in a beautiful green garden where you can even spot monkeys. Since we stayed in Santa Teresa Beach for a longer period, we really appreciated having a small kitchen in the room.
- Hotel Nantipa: A luxury boutique hotel right on the beach with stylish suites and a focus on local culture and sustainability. Unfortunately, it didn’t fit within our world trip budget, but they also have a great restaurant, which we visited often!
- Somos: This cute boutique hotel is located right next to Esencia, where we stayed, and we often went there to eat at their lovely restaurant. If you’re traveling without kids, I would recommend booking here. It has a great vibe and is also very centrally located.

Things to Do and See in Santa Teresa Beach:
For me, Santa Teresa Beach is a great place to do as little as possible. But if you’d like to make it a bit more active, here are things you shouldn’t miss!
Yoga & Surfing
Santa Teresa has several yoga schools that offer individual yoga sessions, sometimes even on the beach. Would you prefer to catch some waves? Santa Teresa is a fantastic spot for surf lessons!
Every Day a Different Beach
You’ll find the most beautiful beaches along Santa Teresa’s beach strip. It’s also fun to rent a bike and go for a bike tour. We visited many different beaches in the area, and I found them all so beautiful and expansive. The mist of the Pacific Ocean is also something special to see on the horizon. Truly breathtaking! Playa Santa Teresa itself is lovely, but if you want to explore more, I recommend Playa Carmen, Playa Hermosa, Playa Manzanillo, and Playa Mal País.
Sundown Picnics
This was our favorite activity in Santa Teresa. As soon as it starts cooling down, we head to the beach for a cozy picnic during the most amazing sundowns. We would search for seashells between the rocks or play in the surf. We’d pick up some snacks at the supermarket, grab a blanket, and that’s all you need. So simple, and yet so beautiful!
Horseback Riding on the Beach
I’m afraid of horses, but the horseback riding sessions on the beach that we saw looked absolutely stunning. So, if you’re a horse lover, find a good organization and add this to your bucket list.
Trendy Beach Clubs
One of our other favorite activities in Santa Teresa? Visiting a different beach club every day. And there are plenty of them! Most beach clubs are great for drinks and a quick snack. For more substantial meals, the best restaurants are mostly on the jungle side of the road (if you ask me!).

Dining and Drinking Tips in Santa Teresa Beach:
Santa Teresa has no shortage of great restaurants. You can visit a different hotspot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. Keep in mind that the prices here are a bit higher than in other parts of Costa Rica if you’re traveling ‘on a budget’. My Your Little Black Book heart skipped a beat for this destination! Here are my favorite spots:
Nami Santa Teresa
This was our favorite restaurant for sushi and other Japanese bites. You’ll find several sushi spots in Santa Teresa, and what’s great is that they all use fresh local fish. So sushi with a Costa Rican twist.
Banana Beach Restaurant
This is the ultimate spot for a relaxed beach day or a sundown drink. The beach club is right on Santa Teresa Beach and has a nice bohemian vibe. There’s a play structure for kids and swings. I’d mainly go here for drinks, but chances are you’ll stick around for food. The crudo of local fish and the pizettes are definitely approved!
Soda Tiquicia
Authentic Costa Rican cuisine at its best! This local soda serves traditional dishes like casados and flavorful gallo pinto. A very friendly and affordable spot, a nice change of pace when you’re craving something other than the trendy restaurants.
El Patio Cafe
A relaxed place for breakfast or lunch in a lovely setting. Think delicious avocado toast, freshly squeezed juices, and the best coffee to start your day. This was my favorite spot to start the day with an iced latte.
Eat Street
A collection of food trucks and stands where you can sample all kinds of dishes, from tacos to poké bowls. There’s a relaxed vibe, and it’s also a fun spot for a drink.
Manzú – A Beachfront Restaurant
One of the best places to eat with a view of the ocean and the sunset is Manzú. Here, you dine with your feet in the sand. This place would fit right in Tulum or Ibiza in terms of vibes. The dishes are Mediterranean-inspired, and the atmosphere is incredibly laid-back luxury.

Your Little Black Book ontstaan.

Scrollend door m’n cameraroll deel ik nog snel wat hoogtepunten én klein alledaags geluk achter de schermen bij Your Little Black Book.

➊ 𝗩𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺
