One of the cities in the Netherlands that surprised me most while writing my book, "Staycation," is perhaps Leiden. It's a city that immediately evokes images of students and student-like pubs, rather than a weekend getaway destination.

Let's just say Leiden has come of age. And it's a wonderful place! With its charming old city center, canals you can even sail on, narrow streets around the Pieterskerk, the beautiful Hortus Botanicus, and hotspots that seem to be popping up everywhere.
