If you're a frequent visitor to Beukenplein, like me, you undoubtedly know Café Maxwell. All credit goes to this establishment, as one of the first hotspots in Amsterdam East. For 17 years, it's been a true neighborhood favorite for coffee, lunch, drinks with friends, and endless dinners with friends. Café Maxwell has been completely renovated, and it's become so charming. Same name and familiar vibe, but with a new look and a delicious menu full of comfort food. I'm already looking forward to enjoying drinks on the spacious terrace when the weather is nice. They also have several fun events planned for the neighborhood, and I'm really looking forward to those.
By the way, did you know that Maxwell is named after Elsa Maxwell? Elsa Maxwell was a legendary American socialite and hostess, known for her glamorous dinners and parties. The name symbolizes her hospitality, but with a distinctly Amsterdam twist! Back at the restaurant is co-owner Max Gerits, who also worked at Maxwell from the very beginning.

The old Maxwell's could really use an update, and it's become so much fun. Totally contemporary, with beautiful green hues, cozy corners, and a living room feel that feels like a warm blanket. The kind of place you can go to with any kind of company. If you ask me, that's really the strength of these kinds of places right now. Another huge plus for me is that you can go as crazy as you like, and there are dishes on the menu for all price ranges.
Will you share some small bites and appetizers at the end of the afternoon, or opt for a classic appetizer, main course, and dessert once the evening menu launches? The new menu is packed with delicious dishes and bites. The restaurant is open daily from 11:00 AM with a tasty lunch menu featuring sandwiches and hot dishes.
I'm also very happy that the classic "bitterhappen" (bitter bites) haven't disappeared from the menu. The best of both worlds! Although I can imagine you're especially curious about the new dishes on the menu, such as enoki (my latest obsession, this mushroom is so delicious), pan con tomate, sardines, or kimchi croquettes. The tarte tatin and other vegetarian dishes also sound incredibly delicious.
I predict the Oklahoma Smashburger (with a double Black Angus patty, cheddar, onion, and secret sauce) will become the menu's classic. I'll definitely be ordering it soon, so keep an eye on @yourlbb!

Elsa Maxwell would be proud of the hospitality team. One of the new initiatives at Café Maxwell is the "Table for the Neighborhood." Every Wednesday evening, for a fixed price, you can join a long table full of neighbors for a delicious main course and a drink. If you enjoy a no-nonsense hospitality experience with a personal touch and a truly homely feel, then you should visit Maxwell soon. It's simply cozy and has a big heart for the neighborhood <3.
| TIP: on the Beukenplein you will find even more nice spots, such as Leo en Massalia Restobar.
