Madeira isn't known as a culinary destination. That's why I've created a comprehensive blog post about the best restaurants in Madeira for lunch and dinner. Madeiran cuisine isn't particularly distinctive, but fresh fish and seafood are found almost everywhere. Most restaurants are located in the capital, Funchal, where you can find authentic tavernas as well as international cuisine. Want to know more about Funchal? Read the comprehensive Funchal Travel Guide with 19 tips here >>

@eetcafe_de_reiger is the spot to remember.
Cozy, casual, and a seasonal menu. This one was on my list to share for a year and finally it's (almost) asparagus season again! 🤤
Another plus? Prices are very reasonable here!
📍 Eetcafé de Reiger
Jordaan, Amsterdam City Centre
Save this spot for when you're craving warm Dutch traditional dishes in the heart of Amsterdam.
And did you hear the same team took over Eetcafé van Beeren? I can't wait to go there too!

A cookbook from Grandma. Three Michelin stars. And a beautiful 70s villa in a quiet neighborhood in Bangkok, where you are welcomed as if you were at the chefs' home.
The Sühring brothers do not cook based on trends; they cook from memories. Of their grandmother's farm, of the flavors of their youth in Germany, and of techniques passed down through generations.
@relaischateaux invited me to experience Sühring during a solo lunch, and this is truly my ultimate definition of culinary self-care.
This was a surprising afternoon in Bangkok, where I ate the best German food I have ever tasted. And that in a city where I normally avoid European restaurants. Well, for @restaurant_suhring, you really want to make that exception.
Signature dishes that I still think back to regularly?
🍴 Labskaus with caviar
🍴 Enleta waffle with Pfalz vinegar
🍴 Game pie
🍴 Dry aged Duck
TIP: If you go to Sühring, reserve the seats at the kitchen bar so you have a view of the chefs at work!

In this reels I take you along for fine dining in Bangkok at the three Michelin starred restaurant Sühring.

This is one of the nicest free outings in the spring! Did you know that you can gather (or pick, for the connoisseurs 😉) oysters yourself in various places in the Netherlands? I’m in Zeeland for a bit this weekend, and if we can, we’ll go again.
📍In this video, I show where you can fill your bucket.
Comment oester for the comprehensive guide with all details about all 8 locations + handy tips and rules.
Important to know:
– Max. 10 kilos per person (≈ 1 bucket)
– For personal use only
– Do not scoop or scrape the soil
– Go at low tide
Handy to take with you:
Bucket, screwdriver, boots, work gloves, tea towel, clean clothes and garbage bags (for the oysters and dirty clothes).
And of course: also bring an oyster knife, lemon and champagne 🍋🥂Because you want to taste something right away!
The oyster season runs from September to about April / early May, so now that the water isn't so cold, this is the perfect outing.
In the full guide, I share exactly where you can easily find them without much effort. Leave a comment and I'll send it to you right away!
Who do you want to go oyster collecting with soon?

From a free event to try new Limited Subs at @ijveramsterdam to slow mornings, a market stroll (or two), maybe finally ticking off that new restaurant that's been on your list for weeks… and ending somewhere with a good glass of wine while telling yourself “just one more” 😉

On the boulevard, but also in the narrow streets of the old town, they're already waiting for you with menus. It's part of the experience on an island that thrives on tourism. But... with the tips from this Madeira restaurant guide, you'll simply walk right past them.
A chef friend gave me tips on his favorite restaurants on the island. You'll find them in this list of the best restaurants in Madeira! Along with my personal favorites where I ate during my trip and the tips I solicited especially for you from the locals I met on various tours.

Pulpo at Faja dos Padres
Dishes you'll definitely want to try include grilled octopus, lapas in garlic wine sauce (also called limpets or Chinese hats), and steak with Madeira sauce. Start the evening with "doses," the local tapas. These often feature seafood, like lapas, but also, for example, pickled octopus with onion (so incredibly delicious, you'll definitely want to try it).

Limpets
Can't quite figure out what to eat with the menu? Feel free to ask the staff for tips and explanations! You might even discover the black scabbardfish, which you wouldn't normally order. Curious how monstrous this local fish looks? Then be sure to check out the fish market. Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal.

Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal
Most good restaurants are located in Funchal. Therefore, in this blog post, I'll distinguish between restaurants in Funchal and those outside.
Boho Bistro: At Boho Kitchen, Asian and Portuguese cuisines converge. You can choose from various menus showcasing the best of chef Francisco Silva's cuisine, or you can order à la carte and create your own perfect meal.
Kampo: This restaurant opened in 2018 near Funchal Cathedral and is already known as one of the best in the area. It's a modern bistro where I'll definitely reserve a table next time I book my ticket.
View this post on Instagram
Restaurante SHU.AKA: For the best sushi in Funchal (and probably all of Madeira) go to Shu.Aka.
Il Vivaldi: A classic in Funchal, close to the seafront promenade, offering both food and interior design. If you dine here, reserve a table on the terrace with a view.

The Vivaldi
William RestaurantThis Michelin-starred restaurant is located in the luxurious Belmond Reid's Hotel It's also known for its excellent afternoon tea. If it rains in Madeira (which can happen occasionally), treat yourself to a culinary afternoon.
Jolie: Not really a restaurant, but the nicest juice bar on the island, which you can find in the corner of the farmer's market Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal finds.

Jolie
Mule: This restaurant, recently opened in Funchal, is one of the new generation of bistros raising the island's culinary bar, according to local food scene insiders. The dishes are pure, with a surprising twist.
Taberninha Zé Vitória: Don't be put off by the restaurant's location. It's located at the end of the touristy Rua Santa Maria, a street with street art adorning centuries-old, dilapidated doors. The street is lined with touts, but according to locals, this tavern is the place to go for authentic Portuguese food.

Nini Design Center
Nini Design Centre: Looking for lunch in a unique location? A former fort now houses the studio and restaurant of Madeiran designer Nini Andrade Silva. You can also dine there, but I personally think the terrace overlooking the water is the best.
Confeitaria No Mercado: Good coffee shops in Madeira are few and far between. Especially if they also have to look nice enough for an Instagram photo. For the tastiest sweets and the best coffee, go to Confeitaria in the Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal.

Confeitaria No Mercado
TIP: Want to try the local alcoholic drink Poncha at a bar? Then go to Barreirinha Bar Café (with a sea view) or Rei da Poncha (among the locals on a small square).

Estalagem Da Ponta do Sol
Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol: During my trip to Madeira, I stayed at this design hotel in the village of Ponta do Sol. Even if you're not staying at the hotel, the restaurant is highly recommended. The steak with Madeira sauce is delicious!
Quinta do Farao: Yet another hotel restaurant. Outside of Funchal's city center, I've noticed that most of the better restaurants are located in hotels. If you dine at this quinta, you'll want to reserve a spot on the terrace overlooking the cliff. Don't be alarmed if it gets very busy inside during lunch; you won't notice it much outside. This restaurant has a magnificent view.
Fathers' Girdle: This unique eco-hotel at the foot of a high cliff is worth a visit for lunch if you're on holiday in Madeira. I stayed there for two nights and explored the island extensively during those days, but if you choose to stay here, you should really enjoy the location and the tranquility. The restaurant is only accessible by cable car or boat. The food is local and certainly not fancy, but it is delicious and pure. The octopus, the tuna, and the paella are highly recommended. Order some appetizers to share beforehand, such as the lapas shells.
