Fish is the new meat, and the places where you can eat good fish in Amsterdam open their doors weekly. From delicious oysters by hand and chic seafood platters to simple fish and chips. It’s time for an update to the list of the best fish restaurants in Amsterdam.

17 X the best seafood restaurants in amsterdam

Le Forel

On the beautiful Bosboom Toussaintstraat, you’ll find Le Forel – a French bistro in Amsterdam with daily fresh fish and a menu that adapts to the available offerings. Consider specialities such as lobster mac & cheese, sole meunière, and classic bisque.

Sagardi

Anyone who has dined there before will be pleased that Sagardi Amsterdam is now in town, so there’s no need to catch a flight anymore (other locations are abroad)—authentic dishes from the Basque Country, with ingredients specially sourced from Spain. The turbot at Sagardi is a must-try dish for fish lovers!

Contrast

At Contrast, you’ll experience a culinary journey on a ship. As expected, fish is a major focus here. It’s a great spot in Noord that every fish lover should try at least once. Bonus: all the fish is sustainably caught in the North Sea.

Barracuda

Amsterdam-Noord has a new hotspot: Barracuda, a fish restaurant in Aambeeldstraat. They have a unique approach: each table receives a menu where you can tick off which dishes you want to be served. From toast with ricotta and clams in white wine to fennel with samphire. Open from Wednesday to Saturday for dinner and lunch on Fridays and Saturdays—the ideal spot for fish lovers in Amsterdam-Noord.

Barracuda Bar

The love and passion for their work are evident from the service at the restaurant. The food at Barracuda (the fish restaurant) is simply top-notch, which is why Barracuda Bar followed soon after. Here, too, you can enjoy tasty fish, shellfish, and crustaceans accompanied by a homemade cocktail.

FÊTEVIS on the Amstel

Admittedly, this new fish restaurant is located in Amstelveen, but it’s well worth the (detour) bike ride. The restaurant is run by the daughters of the couple behind restaurant Green (also a recommendation), and it focuses—as the name suggests—on fish. Great for a date night or dinner with the family.

Sushi Fanatics

In Amsterdam-East, you’ll find one of the best low-key new sushi restaurants in the city. It’s not exactly a fish restaurant, but the focus is definitely on fish. They also regularly offer specials with seasonal fish as the star, like sea urchin. Keep an eye on their Instagram for updates.

Viscafé De Gouden Hoek

Within walking distance of Westerpark, on Limburg van Stirumplein, you’ll find a real gem for anyone who loves an (affordable) fish dish and isn’t in the mood for anything fancy. At Viscafé De Gouden Hoek, they’re not fans of fancy. What do they love? Good food, really good food, and lots of it. This is where you go for a superb Dutch shrimp croquette, mussels with bread, fried fish and tartar sauce, oysters, and fish & chips.

John Dory

At John Dory, they want you to experience their take on “fish gastronomy” down to the last detail. Dishes with a lot of fish, that’s for sure. But it’s not just any fish; at John Dory, they only serve fish caught in Dutch waters. So, there is no salmon or tuna from afar; instead, mackerel and lobster are from close to home. The result? Deliciously refined dishes made with ultra-fresh fish, yum!

The Seafood Bar – multiple locations

The Seafood Bar Amsterdam now has not one, not two, but four locations in Amsterdam! You’re always close to one with their branches in Oud-Zuid, De Pijp, and two locations in the city centre (Damrak and Spui). You can enjoy delicious lobster soup, crab cakes, vongole, a seafood platter to share, our favourite ceviche, fish & chips, mussels, and more at all locations.

Plenty of choices! Not in the mood for oysters but still want fish? The menu offers a changing selection of fish and fruits de mer dishes!
