8 X Fun fall Day Trips During Autumn in the Netherlands
Oyster Picking in the Netherlands
If you’re like me and love oysters, you’re in luck! The “R” is back in the month, which means the foraging season has started again! Iโve picked oysters in the Netherlands a few times, and itโs a lot of fun. In this detailed blog, you can read all about the best places in the Netherlands to pick oysters. There are various locations in the Netherlands where you can forage wild oysters, as itโs officially called. You can find wild oysters in places like Texel (at De Mokbaai and De Cocksdorp), Yerseke, Wilhelminadorp, De Oesterdam (all in Zeeland), the Wadden dike at Oost-Vlieland, and Lauwersoog in Groningen. Youโre allowed to pick up to 10 kg of oysters per person. Enjoy!
Take a Beautiful Autumn Walk
If you ask me, nature is at its most beautiful in autumn. Thatโs why I love heading out into nature with my family on the weekends. Afterward, we stop for a cozy drink somewhere, making it the perfect weekend day. Every week, we try to explore a new natural area, and by now, Iโve compiled a fantastic list of places to walk and enjoy a drink. Check them all out here >>ย

Apple Picking Around Amsterdam
Did you know you can pick apples at various lovely pick-your-own gardens and apple orchards near Amsterdam? Not only is it fun to do, but believe me, that apple pie tastes even better when you’ve put in the effort to pick the apples yourself. Here are our favorite spots for apple picking in the autumn: Fruittuin van West (Amsterdam),ย Fruitkwekerij ‘t Keetje (Lutjebroek), and the Olmenhorst (Lisse).
Visit a Pumpkin Farm
Kids or no kids, visiting a pumpkin farm really gets you into the autumn spirit. Trust me! It’s become a tradition for us. Iโve put together a list of pumpkin farms across the Netherlands for you. Make sure to check when they are open before heading out, as opening times vary greatly. And more importantly: check when their pumpkin season ends (likely at the end of October). Go to an Indoor Ski Hall or Ice Rink
Did you miss the ski season too? Fingers crossed that you can hit the slopes this year! With little kids, you donโt have to travel far to get that ultimate winter sports feeling. The Netherlands has several indoor ski halls that are perfect for practicing your skiing skills. Afterward, grab a hot chocolate, and youโll feel like youโre in a different world. These indoor ski halls are also great if you want to go skiing for the first time but havenโt yet tried it. Ice skating is also a fun autumn activity. The season for many (outdoor) ice rinks across the Netherlands has started! A great idea for an autumn date too.
Visit a Light Art Festival
The Amsterdam Light Festival is famous throughout the Netherlands. But did you know there are many more beautiful light art festivals you can visit? GLOW in Eindhoven, for example, is highly recommended! Because I love beautiful lights during the darker days, Iโve compiled a list of the best light art festivals in the Netherlands that you can visit between now and January. Check out 14 tips here >>
Go Mushroom spotting
Have you spotted them this year? During a walk in the nature reserve near Radio Kootwijk, I saw several fly agarics for the first time this year. Itโs always special to see this iconic red with white-dotted mushroom in real life. Youโre most likely to find beautiful mushrooms after a rainy period. So, when the weather clears up, itโs a great reason to head to the forest. Youโll mainly find the fly agaric near oak, birch, or heathland areas. Plan a Culinary Weekend Getaway
Autumn is also my favorite season for harvesting. I love mushrooms and earthy flavors. So, every autumn, we plan a culinary weekend getaway! A beautiful hotel, sending the kids off to their grandparents, and enjoying an extensive dinner at the hotel. Itโs wonderfully relaxing when the hotel has a great restaurant because, after dinner, you can roll straight into bed or enjoy a drink at the bar. Some favorites weโve visited over the years are Parc Broekhuizen, Het Roode Koper, Bij JEF, Op Oost, and Hemel & Aarde (in The Nox hotel). One destination still on my wishlist is Het Strandhotel in Cadzand. A weekend in Maastricht is always a good idea too!
