Bennies Amsterdam: from pop-up to permanent restaurant in Amsterdam South

For years Bennies Amsterdam wandered through our capital as popup restaurantAt the end of last year, the restaurant opened on Helikopterstraat in Amsterdam-Zuid, and it proved to be a masterstroke. Things were so successful that the owners decided to make it their permanent home.

Why you should visit Bennies Amsterdam

At the end of 2023 it was the hit of Amsterdam South: the Bennies pop-up on Helikopterstraat. The enterprising duo behind Bennies Amsterdam, chef Rick Swinkels and entrepreneur Isidoor van Esch, decided to take a leap of faith: and thus, the permanent location of their restaurant became a reality.

However, a lot preceded it, including months of renovations and a brand-new interior created by Studio Elèn Letort (also from Amsterdam). Together, they transformed the large building into a unique, modern, and atmospheric space. The light yellow, custom-made kitchen countertop contrasts with the stainless steel tables and the extensive use of wood. It makes Bennies a wonderful place to relax.

Menu Bennies Amsterdam

At Bennies Amsterdam, they like to keep things simple: no menus that take fifteen minutes to choose from, leaving you overwhelmed with choices. Simple dishes made with good ingredients need little fuss, as this place proves. From sea bass ceviche to salmon tostada and burrata with bell pepper and tomato: they all shine in their simplicity. And anyone who loves natural wines will be in their element at Bennies. The staff will happily recommend matching glasses (or bottles).

You've also come to the right place for lunch. The scrambled eggs with comté cheese are a favorite, as are the burrata with dates (a must!) and their brunch plate with egg, comté cheese, jam, bread, and butter. Then there's the snack menu, which jokingly features mini frikandellen alongside fried chicken gado-gado. A bonus: a large part of the restaurant is reserved for spontaneous drop-ins. Good restaurants where you don't need a reservation are rare in Amsterdam, and the owners find that a disgrace.

Come with me to get breakfast in Taipei 🥢 Straight from the airport to this little spot to taste soup dumplings and so much more! That's what I call a soft landing 😉
Just back from Catalonia and I thought: I'll share some tips right away. During our road trip, we stayed two nights in the Ebro Delta. An incredibly fun stop for families and foodies alike, where there is plenty to do. · A boat trip to the Musclarium is a must! Here you eat oysters and mussels straight from the farm, in the middle of the sea. · Admire the flamingos and black ibises that can be found here all year round. · Rice is grown in the Ebro Delta all year round. For paella, but Kensho also makes sake and miso from it! You can visit them during a tasting. · Cycling along the rice fields, canoeing on the Ebro River, and visiting various beaches. It was still a bit too cold now, but there is plenty to do. · The towns are very low-key and not that exciting, but you can find fantastic local food there. From the Michelin-awarded Les Moles* to local eateries like Vermuteria Bonmarisc and Lo Tinglado. We ate a lot of fish, but also anemone fritters (a first!). Now back to work, and I’m going to create an extensive travel guide of this road trip through Catalonia, but you’ll want to save these tips for a future adventure. ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck { In this post, I share tips for the Ebro Delta in Spain (Delta de l'Ebre).
