9 Tips for a City Trip to Portland (Oregon) in Any Season

July 26, 2022
Last updated: July 26, 2022

Portland, you're so cool! It might not be the first city you think of for a city break to the United States, but if you love cities like New York and Berlin, you'll love Portland, Oregon. A few years ago, I was there in the spring to film an elaborate production for Your Little Black Book, and I can't wait to go back in a different season. The Indian Summer in Portland, known there as the "Second Summer," seems especially beautiful! Portland, on the west coast of the US, is a super diverse destination for a city break. Discover the vibrant (and super hip) city, sample flavors from all corners of the world at the many food trucks, and explore the beautiful hinterland full of nature. From mountains and waterfalls to volcanoes, vineyards, and rugged beaches with impressive rock formations. Portland, Oregon is the perfect destination if you want to combine nature, delicious food, and discovering trendy neighborhoods! In this new guide, I share my best tips for every season.

𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗘𝗡 𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬 👀 This is the coolest new hotel for a night away! Meet @viaantwerp , the newest boutique hotel in Antwerp on the border of Zurenborg and Borgerhout (yep, voted 2nd coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out). I recently stayed at this gem and this hotel really has it all: a lively bar with a cozy atmosphere, walls full of creative art, beautiful bright rooms and it's within walking distance of great hotspots. And I haven't even mentioned @mea.antwerp! The delicious restaurant with a chef behind the pans who previously cooked at The Palomar in London. If you know, you know! And now the best news: I can surprise one of you with a dream night away at VIA Antwerp. 💛 𝗪𝗔𝗧 𝗝𝗘 𝗞𝗨𝗡𝗧 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗡 • Overnight stay for 2 people • Breakfast included • Chef's dinner at MEA 𝗭𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗔𝗞 𝗝𝗘 𝗞𝗔𝗡𝗦 • Let us know in the comments which friend you would like to stay here with • Of course, also take a look at @viaantwerp & @mea.antwerp to dream away and follow their updates The winner will be notified personally via DM on December 10th. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and will soon share a mini guide with more great tips for Antwerp! 🖤 ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck #antwerp #antwerp #zurenborg #antwerpencity #borgerhout
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱! I've rounded up a complete list with the coziest and most festive Christmas markets in Amsterdam you don't want to miss this year. Think twinkling lights, mulled wine, food stalls, live music, unique gifts and lots of Christmas vibes all December long. Whether you're planning a festive day with the fam or friends, or just want to soak up that holiday spirit. These are the markets in Amsterdam to put on your calendar now. 🎄✨ 𝘿𝙧𝙤𝙥 “𝘾𝙃𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙏𝙈𝘼𝙎𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙆𝙀𝙏” 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄'𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝙔𝙇𝘽𝘽-𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙖𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙨. Send this list to your festive partner-in-crime, grab a hot chocolate (or mulled wine 😉), and have fun! ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck #yourlittleblackbook #christmasinamsterdam #amsterdammarkets #christmasmarkets #amsterdamguide thingstodoinamsterdam winterinthenetherlands festiveseason christmasvibes marktlovers amsterdamtips
HOME ALONE 4 INCOMING 😅 My trip to NYC ends in a bad (Christmas) movie when the hotel gives my carry-on with my passport to an old lady who doesn't realize it and checks it in for a flight to the UK! Now I'm stuck here in NY without my passport, and I've missed my flight. I've experienced a lot in all the years I've been traveling for Your Little Black Book, but this is a first 😅. This chat video is purely therapeutic in nature 🤣🤣🤣. Because really: HOW?! 🫢 Note to self: better to take my passport with me all day, instead of leaving it 'safely' in the hotel apparently... and from now on, suitcases should be tied together with a cable in the storage room. Even if you're in a luxurious and expensive hotel, everything is still human work. Now I'm stuck in one of the nicest cities in the world, but of course I just want to be home with Manuel as planned. 😔 To be continued 🧳✈️ And thanks for all the sweet DMs ❤️❤️❤️❤️ ✖️✖️✖️ Anne
And do you also have a nice garden? I want to thank you for your patience and help. 𝟳-𝗷𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲! This time we went to @williams.farmhouse one of my favorites for lunch in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. But is this also fun during the day with kids? We ordered a 'plain' version of the Farmhouse burger 🍔: yes, really just meat + cheese 🤣… and together with the fries it was a mega success. Child happy, us happy… and it was such a cozy, rainy afternoon. I mean this interior, I immediately dream away to the Cotswolds again! Do you have a favorite 𝗸𝗶𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁 in Amsterdam or the Netherlands?  | HOW TO GET THERE: With KLM and Delta Air Lines you can fly directly from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Portland International Airport (PDX)The airport is close to the city, and a taxi will take you to the check-in desk of the ACE Hotel in the heart of downtown in just 15 minutes. I stayed there myself when I was in Portland, and I would book it again in a heartbeat! What I especially liked about this airport is that you can find Portland-specific restaurants, like Mo's Clam Chowder and Blue Star, for a quick bite to eat before your return flight. More information about the direct flight with KLM (whether or not operated by Delta Air Lines) and the fares can be found here >>

Discover the four seasons during a city trip to Portland (Oregon)

The best time to travel is… NOW

If there's one thing I learned during our world trip, it's that I'm a true lover of the four seasons. Something Portland is known for! Just like in the Netherlands, the summers are pleasantly warm and the winters are colder, but generally not too cold. The warmest months are July and August, when it's around 27 degrees Celsius. Wonderful weather for enjoying the city outdoors or paddleboarding on the river. If you're planning a city break in the fall, you can still expect warmer weather until early October. And it's always extra fun to be in America around that time, because Portland also hosts all sorts of fun Halloween events every year. December, January, and February are the coldest months. Don't let the temperature deter you, because with all the festive and holiday season events, like the annual Christmas Festival of Lights, November and December are perhaps the most wonderful time of year to visit! Rent a bicycle

Locals in Portland love cycling just as much as the Dutch! And I can tell you from experience that it's the perfect way to explore the city. Many hotels also offer bike rentals. There are bike lanes throughout the city, which made me feel incredibly safe on the bike. During my city trip to Portland, I also had a bike tour Do it with a guide, which immediately gives you a better understanding of the city. Highly recommended for your first day, for example. Would you like to cycle more actively and explore the Portland area? Then view various cycling routes here >>

Discover food truck heaven

One of the things that makes Portland, Oregon, truly unique? The food trucks, or food carts, as they also call them in Portland! I'd never been to a city where the food truck culture practically overshadows the restaurant scene. You name it, there's a food truck specializing in it from every corner of the globe, or for every cuisine. I'd love to go back to Portland just for the food trucks. You'll find food trucks clustered throughout the city in so-called "food truck pods." On this website you can find all food carts in Portland and you can even filter by the type of cuisine you are in the mood for >> Handy!

Wander through Central City and beyond

Besides cycling, Portland is also a great place to explore on foot. Especially if, like me, you enjoy popping into the various hotspots to browse or grab a bite to eat and drink. The city is roughly divided into North and South, with Burnside Street serving as the border. The Willamette River divides the city into East and West. The central part of the city is located around the river. In Central City, you'll find several highlights not to be missed during your city break, such as the famous Saturday Market. Visiting Portland in a very warm month or with a forecast of rain? This weather is perfect for exploring the city's museums, such as the Portland Art Museum, the Japanese American Museum of Oregon, and the Portland Chinatown Museum, which opened in 2018. And do you, like me, love books? Visit Powell's City of Books, the largest bookstore in the world selling used and new books!

TIP: Do you love the trendy and up-and-coming neighborhoods just outside downtown? Then you definitely don't want to miss Southeast Portland and the Division Street area. Discover Portland's different neighborhoods here >>

Say Portland, and you say Oregon! The hinterland is just as fun and diverse as the city itself. In the Portland area, you have various wineries You can visit. You can easily extend your city break by a day if you want to go vintage shopping, as the selection is both excellent and extensive. Take a coffee tour

Are you a coffee lover like me? Then you'll love Portland. In the summer, you drink it iced, in the winter, hot, hot, hot! The ACE Hotel where I stayed had a Stumptown Coffee location, and believe me, it's a great way to wake up. I popped downstairs for a coffee and a bagel, and then back in my room, I'd plan my route and day. Want to learn more about Portland's coffee culture and the many excellent "third wave" coffee bars you can find? Then a coffee tour is a great idea! Of course, you can also plan your own tour.
