Only a few more weeks until it’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Maybe your’re like me and you have your radio at the office or in the car on the Christmas station for days in a row but I truly think it’s one of the best times of the year. Amsterdam turned into a real Christmas city as well the past few weeks with alle the festive lights and so many nice markets, read our blog about the best Christmas markets in Amsterdam here. But… if there’s one country that’s best in Christmas markets it has to be Germany. Perfect for a day trip from The Netherlands! Maybe we go there in my new Your Little Black Book Peugeot 208. Eating our way through the market and taking the new car for a test drive on the Deutsche auobahn ;-). In this blog I listed the best Christmas markets in Germany for this year. Dusseldorf: Just 2.5 hours away from Amsterdam you will find the Christmas market of Dusseldorf. Or rather, the six Christmas markets in Dusseldorf. You find the different markets scattered throughout the city, each with their own theme. And of course the indispensable ice skating rink of 450 square meters at the Gastaf Gründgens Platz! Until December 30!
Oberhausen: The Bijenkorf and Magna Plaza are the warehouses in Amsterdam that steal the show with their beautiful decorations, but in Oberhausen it definitely is CentrO. This warehouse goes all in to give you those cozy Christmas feelings. And at the square in front the building you find the market for all your Christmas supplies. Only two hours away from our capital. Until December 23!
Cologne: When talking about Christmas markets in Germany, Cologne definitely is one with a special touch. The Dom is the shining centre of the Christmas market and completes the ultimate cozy, authentic Christmas feeling. And of course glühwein, curryworst and beautiful xmas gifts in galore here as well. That makes the road trip of +/- 3 hours totally worth it. Until December 23!
Munster: With 300 stalls the Christmas market in Munster in Germany is one of the largest. Don’t let that scare you, because right here is where you’ll find the traditional atmosphere like nowhere else. The Christmas market is spread over 5 different squares, with the Prinzipalmarkt – thanks to its beautiful lightning – and the Aegidiimarkt – thanks to its Christmas crib – as favorites. It’s takes a 2.5 hour drive and is waiting for you until December 23!
Essen: The Christmas market in Essen excels by its special character. In addition to the traditional German Christmas culture, also other cultures are represented here. For example Cuba, Africa and Russia. And all in the medieval character of the city. Essen is just above Dusseldorf, so within a 2.5 hour drive you can admire the beautiful Christmas lights. Until december 23!
Aachen: It’s the Christmas market that you can perfectly combine with a weekend in Maastricht. From Maastricht it’s only a half hour drive to the Christmas market in Aachen and you’ll be immersed in ultimate Christmas vibes. In addition to glühwein, crepes and curryworst, you will also find the famous Aachen Printen here, their own version of gingerbread. There to try until December 23!
Berlin: As capital of Germany you of course may not stay behind in Christmas vibes. That’s why Berlin is transformed into one big cozy Christmas market with 26 different markets spread across the city. And if you’re in Berlin anyway, make sure you visit one of these hotspots ;-). Until November 29.
Munich: Munich is yet another city where the Christmas market perfectly settles in the historical backdrop of the city. The beautiful lit stalls, delicious tastings and glühwein smokes make you taste the cozy Bavarian vibes everywhere. Just like Berlin a little bit further – a 8 hour drive – away, but hey, it’s totally worth it. Until December 24!
Dresden: Guess when the first edition of the Christmas market in Dresden took place? In 1434. This makes it the oldest Christmas market of Germany. You can see the old traditions everywhere, like the worlds biggest Christmas stoll of 2000 kilos that’s baked at the market every year. Or taste the regional specialty Bratäpfel. Yum! Make it a weekend away, because Dresden is about a 7 hour drive away. Until December 24.
Frankfurt: Last but not least is the Christmas market in Frankfurt. For this market it goes as well that it’s a little bit out of the direction. It takes a 4 hour drive to get there, but what’s better than to sing aalong the best Christmas songs on your way to one of the most fairylike Christmas markets? In Frankfurt it feels like you’re wandering on the setting of one of the fairytales: there’s a huge Christmas tree and the crib is filled with living characters under the guidance of Santa Claus. If that doesn’t make you happy…
