6 x travel tips for Sal in Cape Verde

Are you in need of a sun holiday? May I recommend you to go to Sal in Cape Verde? Only a 6 to 7 hour flight and you will find yourself in the middle of summer. Also in wintertime.  And my oh my, how enjoyable that is. I really liked the people in Cape Verde, they were super friendly. The weather was great, with a little breeze and lots of sunshine in the afternoon. Are you making plans to go to Cape Verde? Here you will find our 6 tips in the Sal Travel Guide!

1 >> Visa >> Cape Verde travel tips

You need a visa to go to Cape Verde. Something you can arrange in advance or just at the border. Quanta costa? 25 Euro p.p. and you can pay in Euro’s or with a credit card.

2 >> Money, money, money >> sal travel tips

Take your Euries along with you to Cape Verde because you can pay with Euro’s pretty much everywhere. Most of the restaurant menus are even in Euro’s. A summer cocktail is about E 4,50. The prices for a wine are pretty much the same as in Holland. The prices at the restaurants where we went to were between 6 and 14 euro for a starter and 13 to 30 euro for a main course.

3 >> Hotels >> Cape Verde travel tips

Most of the hotels in Cape Verde are all inclusive. Pretty relaxed if you want to know what to expect and don’t want to have anything on your mind. For Tui I stayed for example in Riu Garupa, which was really relaxed. But also Sal has a few really nice boutique style hotels which I can recommend to you and I cant wait to try them out myself.

4 >> Food & drinks >> sal travel tips

Are you staying on Sal? Then you have to go to Santa Maria for dinner. There you will find, surprisingly enough, a lot of Italian restaurants, which I didn’t mind at all. Menu’s full of fresh fish and lobster. Yum! The local seafood speciality will surprise you. In Cape Verde I ate barnacles. Yes, apparently you can eat them. And so tasty! The taste is a bit between a crab and a cockle. A must try for when you’re there! Nice restaurants to go to, are: Leonardo, Barracuda.
Tip: make a reservation in advance, it can be really busy.

5 >> To do >> Cape Verde travel tips

When you go to Sal, or another Island of Cape Verde, be prepared to be doing nothing at all. Digital detoxing, relaxing in the sun and in the ocean, enjoy time with your love and good food. There is not much else to do. What we can recommend? If you are in the right season in Cape Verde, you can go whale spotting and the bay will be packed with lemon sharks. You will understand: we will be back. Another cool thing to do is a jeep safari in a 4 x 4, nice if you want to see a bit more then just Santa Maria ;-).

6 >> (Kite) surfing >> SAL travel tips

Because Sal and the whole of Cape Verde gets a lot of wind it’s also the perfect Island for (kite)surfing lovers. You have to be able to resist the big waves though :-). I bumped into a follower of Your Little Black Book when I was at Cape Verde. She told me that taking kitesurfing lessons in Cape Verde is a lot cheaper than in a lot of other places. For a 2 hours private lesson you pay 95 Euro and you will be picked up from your hotel.
