I can’t wait to spend some time in cosy Amsterdam the coming days. So read on and discover what you can do on December 24, 25 and 26 december 2017 in Amsterdam. And at the bottom of this blog I’m also sharing some tips for New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam. Happy holidays!
To do’s during Christmas | Christmas in Amsterdam 2017
Amsterdam Light Festival: The Amsterdam Light Festival is nice to check out. Walk the route and discover all the light scuptures along the canals. Or make a special boat tour over the canals to see everything from the water. Make it a perfect romantic night and bring your own gluhwein while exploring the city.
The beautiful Hortus Botanicus is open for a couple of dates at night during the Winter. You can get a tour of the magical lighted garden, a three course dinner or just stop by for only a drink. The Hortus By Light is great to do on a romantic evening with your lover!
De Amsterdamse Winter Parade: The RAI will change from December 21 until January 1 in a true Christmas walhalla. A gigantic Christmas market will be organized this year where you can get that ultimate Christmas feeling. Expect square kilometers full of Christmas balls, ‘oliebollen’, angel hair, Christmas men, a lot of Christmas lights and hot chocolate milk.
And have you heard that the curling track at Floor 17 has opened again?
Visit the inner gardens of Pulitzer Amsterdam: Curious about the tallest Christmas trees in Amsterdam? Visit the indoor gardens of the Pulitzer and enjoy a winter cocktail, heaters, blankets and even heated cushions.
On Christmas Eve you can visit the Oosterpark just before dinner and participate in a Christmas walk. You experience the story of Christmas in this beautiful park while enjoying a hot chocolate. Also very fun to do with your kids. Good to know: the entrance is free and it starts at 6.30PM. Check the Facebook event here.
Ice skating at the Museum square: Do you want to go ICE skating during Christmas? ICE Amsterdam is open during Christmas (check their opening times before you go) and at Museumplein you also find the Christmas markets with food and crafts.
Visit museums: Most museums in Amsterdam are open year round. For example the Rijksmuseum is open 365 days a year and Het Stedelijk museum is also open on December 25 and 26. Het Tropenmuseum is open both December 24 and 26. And if you want to go to Moco Museum you can also do that during Christmas. Check the opening times before you go because they might be different for the holidays.
Klassiek in de Loods: Classic music for the elderly? Not at all! Every year on Christmas Eve there’s a classical music concert at a different location to attract a younger audience and let them get to know classic music. This year the location is the Gashouder. Fun fact: Everyone with the name ‘Maria’ gets to enter for free. Check out the Facebook event here.
Dinner at the Winterparade: What about dining at a super long table while you’re entertained with dance, theater and music? Check out the Winterparade at the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam. Until December 30.
Find out how Christmas was celebrated in the 19th century: Museum Willet-Holthuysen will show in the exhibition that opens this Saturday how the wealthy married couple Willet celebrated Christmas in the 19th century. In their imposing city palace on the Herengracht, his dining room, ballroom and garden room are transformed into the Christmas spheres of that time.
Winter Village (Amstelveen): A bit further away, but nice! From November 29 to January 7, the Stadsplein in Amstelveen will be transformed into an atmospheric Christmas market. With a cozy terrace, an ice rink and sixty stalls with gift, winter and Christmas things.
Enjoy the Amsterdam Light Festival from the water: With the Gs light boat you sail past the most beautiful artworks of the Amsterdam Light Festival. Drink a delicious wine while looking at the stars under a blanket. This is winter!
