Checking-in: The Capra Saas-Fee (Switzerland)

4 March 2020

lovely luxury at The Capra, the best 5-star hotel in Saas-Fee

Saas-Fee is an immensely popular ski area in Wallis, Switzerland where you’ll definitely want to go if you’re a fan of skiing. The Capra is a beautiful 5-star hotel where you’ll lack absolutely nothing during your ski trip to Saas-Fee. This hotel opened its doors in 2016 and it’s the second 5-star hotel in the village. As you probably know, Saas-Fee is a car-free village, but the team of The Carpa always stands ready at the parking places or the busstation, to pick you yup and bring you to the hotel.

The Capra means “goat” and you can see that very subtly in some details in the hotel. For example, there’s a “Do not disturb” sign carved from wood in the shape of a goat hanging on the door. You’ll be happily greeted at the check-in by general manager Raphaël, who will make sure you’ll lack nothing during your stay. The ski lifts are on a five to seven minute walking distance, but the hotel also as a taxi-service that can take you to the lifts. Very convenient: across the funicular there’s a little barn where you can stall your ski equipment, so you don’t have to carry that to the lifts. After the skiing you can have a drink by the fireplace in the cosy bar and living room of The Capra. This way you’ll enjoy the feeling of a chalet, while enjoying 5-star luxury!

rooms x The Capra Saas Fee

You’ll stay in one of the suites or in the recently opened chalet in The Capra. The suites consists of a sitting room and a badroom, and they’re equipped with a lovely luxurious bathroom. After a day of skiing you’ll completely come at ease in the giant bath tub with the bathing products of Bogner. Whether it’s the fresh Alp air or the godlike boxspring… Boy, I slept like a baby in The Capra.

The room is nicely interiored with lots of wood and natural materials. Modern but not too design, in my opinion they’ve succesfully created to give it that cosy Alpine feeling. The mini-bar with sodas is included in the room rate and they put a new carafe of water on your night stand every evening. I loved it to opening the doors to my balcony in the morning and watch the view of the mountains. You can make your own coffee on your room, so before you head for breakfast coffeelovers like me can have a first cup in my room while enjoying the beautiful view.

Wellness x The Capra Saas-Fee

Is there something better than hopping into the sauna or the Turkish steambath to fully relax after a day of skiing? During my stay they were busy building a new spa in the garden of The Capra. With an inside and outside pool and several sorts of saunas.

As soon as the larger spa is finished, the current wellness will be used as a private sauna that you can book together with your partner. I loved to completely relax in the Finnish sauna after a day on the slopes of Saas-Fee. Just letting all the impressions of the day pass you by in your thoughts and hop in the jacuzzi for a bit afterwards. You’ll be sitting completely relaxed as you head for dinner after that!

La Locanda x The Capra Saas-Fee

Whoever loves good food came to the right address at The Capra. It already starts with breakfast which is included in the rate of the room. Start the day with a glass of bubbly and some local products to put on the freshly baked bread. From cheeses to smoked ham and salmon, or have a bowl of yogurt with homemade muesli and sorts of seeds. You can also order a couple of dishes á la carte like pancakes or poached eggs with salmon and avocado. Very tasty!

La Locanda is also open for lunch and dinner. The Italian menu has a Swiss touch and has been put together by the with two Michelin-star rewarded Chef Oliver Glowig who also runs a restaurant in Rome. As dinner they serve several tasting menus, consisting of 6 courses, where you can have an extensive dinner and enjoy the best ingredients from Wallis. It’s also possible to order á la carte if you would rather have less courses. I’m staying at The Capra half board and I’m enjoying a delicious 3-course menu.

Also nice: At The Capra you can participate in a wine tasting or cooking class!

Retreats x The Capra

The team of The Capra has vividly told me about the plans they still have with the hotel. For example, outside of the ski seasons they’re planning on organizing several retreats. Weeks within a certain theme where everything is taken care for. Think of yoga for instance, but also nutrition, cycling or cross fit.

For me that’s very interesting. Because why are we mostly going on yoga retreats in warm countries, while in my opinion there’s nothing more healing for the mind than the view of the Swiss Alpes and the fresh outdoors air. How nice is it to go for a walk in the mountains or relax in the new spa of The Capra after a yoga session in the morning?

I’m hoping to come back to Saas-Fee one day to participate in one of these retreats!

Saas-Fee Travel Tips

This is how you get there:
► From Amsterdam you fly to Zürich in a mere couple of hours with SWISS. Zürich is a very nice city, so in case you have some time left you stay there for an extra night I would definitely recommend that! Tip: during a stop-over, stay in the trendy 25Hours hotel.
►The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to travel through the whole of Switzerland by train, boat and bus. The train ride to Brig or Visp takes about 2 hours from Zürich. Then from Brig or Visp you proceed to take the Bus 511 to Saas-Fee. Warning: the village of Saas-Fee in Wallis is car-free so make sure that you get picked up at the busstation by your hotel with an electric taxi.
