Newcastle day trip: beach in Tynemouth

Tynemouth: just 30 minutes with the Metro from NewCastle

When you’re going on a city trip to NewCastle it’s fun to go to Tynemouth for an afternoon. It’s a small town on the coast just 30 minutes by metro from NewCastle Central Station. When I went it was stormy and wet but I can imagine that it’s beautiful in the warm weather months. I think combining the beach with a city trip is the perfect combination!

At the station in Tynemouth there’s a flea market. I was there on a Saturday and it was quite busy! They had some stalls with vintage items but I already shopped so much that I didn’t bother to check them out. Wouldn’t fit my suitcase anyway ;-).

So I walked straight to the city center (just a 5 min walk from the station) to see what Tynemouth is like. My first stop was an old church that now is a shopping center. Or… as I should say there are some shops in there. Most of them are old fashioned and not so trendy but there’s a cool barber shop and a nice cafe called the Kitcheners Vintage Cafe. That’s where I went for my shot of cappuccino!

Kitcheners Vintage Cafe in Tynemouth is a cool coffee hotspot totally decorated with furniture from the fifties. You can even order a Elvis sandwich there! The girls that work there fit the picture perfectly. It was too bad that I had a good breakfast already because the cakes at the Kitcheners Vintage Cafe looked soooo delicious!

After my coffee it was time to walk up to the beach. It was my first time on the British coast and I have to say… it was exactly what I expected! A castle and a rocky beach. Too bad it wasn’t summer yet I think it would be very nice to just hang out at the beach. Or to go for drinks on one of the terraces. It was nice to be at the shore though and to get some fresh air!

Before I hopped on the metro back to NewCastle again I went to this cute lunch cafe called the Dil and The Bear. A coffee cafe with a huge selection of cakes and sweets. On the lunch menu you find everything from soups to sandwiches and salads. All home made and with organic ingredients where possible. I had a veggie platter for lunch at Dil and The Bear. I can highly recommend it! The veggie platter comes with beetroot spread, hummus, olives a cole slaw and goat cheese.A perfect light lunch!

When you’re in NewCastle on a city trip it’s definitely worth the trip down to Tynemouth. This small town looks super cosy and the British coast is really beautiful.
