12 X movie theatres IN AMSTERDAM for the PERFECTE MOVIE DATE

Studio/K: Studio/K is ran completely by students which makes this movie theatre in Amsterdam East extra special. Next to a cinema, this place is also a bar, restaurant, and club. Super nice, if you’re ready to dance after the movie. Oh, and a bonus tip from us: the apple pie is delicious here!

Kriterion: Kriterion is more than just a movie theatre. It’s become quite a popular place in the Roetersstraat, very close to the University of Amsterdam. When the last classes are done students come here to drink a beer – or two. After that you can always decide if you want to go to a movie or not. The chairs are comfortable and the screen is big. What more could you wish for?

The Movies: Grab a bite first, and then a movie, that’s so much fun right? The cute movie theatre The Movies in the Haarlemmerbuurt is great for that combination. From Thursday to Sunday you can order a movie menu at The Movies. After the movie you drink a glass of wine, we like!

Eye: Eye is, apart from a movie theatre, also the film museum of Amsterdam. Cross the IJ with the ferry to arrive in North, to see this architectural piece of art. You’ll have great views over the IJ and the food is delicious. In the summer you can sit outside on the terrace, but even when it’s colder this is a good place to hang out. The movie halls are big and comfortable, exactly the way we like them.

The Filmhallen: The Filmhallen in Amsterdam West is a good addition to the movie options in Amsterdam. It’s from the same owners as The Movies (has a spot in this list too!). Go to the Foodhallen or Remise 47 first for a big meal. After that, you can roll right into the Filmhallen. If you’re up for a blockbuster, then you’re at the right spot. But if you’re more in the mood for an arthouse movie, you’re also at the right address at De Filmhallen Amsterdam.

Ketelhuis: First go to Mossel & Gin, then to the Ketelhuis on the Westergasterrein. This small movie theatre in Amsterdam plays quality movies that are carefully handpicked by the staff. They mostly specialise in Dutch cinema. If you’re up to stay for a some conversation after the movie, you should also order a piece of carrot cake; it is to die for.

Cavia: Filmhuis Cavia has emerged from a squatters’ movement, a cinema where you can see movies that are not shown at many Movie theatres in Amsterdam. Think of Dutch horror, short movies an literary festivals.

Tuschinski: Okay, okay, we admit it. Tuschinski is not a real movie theatre, but a Pathé-cinema. Regardless, this cinema feels like a real, beautiful movie theatre when you walk in. In this cinema, with artdeco style, in the city centre of Amsterdam you’ll see blockbusters, but also PAC-films (Pathé Alternative Cinema). If you can go to room 1, always do so. Then book the love seats for a real VIP treatment. Drinks and snacks are included in this, and you’ll definitely have the best seats in the house!

LAB 111: You can visit LAB 111 for the the best and rare gems of the movies. A lot of filmfestivals show their best work at LAB 111. You can see a lot of animated films, documentaries, and films that can’t really be placed into a specific genre. Tip: grab a drink and a bite at Strangelove, the restaurant next to LAB 111, to complete your evening.

Melkweg: At the Melkweg you can enjoy a nice concert ánd watch nice movies. I bet you didn’t know that! On the first floor, in the Melkweg Expo, you can watch regular music films and music documentaries. Good news for the real music fans!

De Uitkijk: Filmtheater De Uitkijk is one of those cinemas you want to go to at least once in your life. It’s a cinema in a historical building on the Prinsengracht. And one with a lot of character. Nice: De Uitkijk is also run by students.

Cinecenter: Cinecenter is a movie theatre in Amsterdam hidden between the Leidseplein and the Melkweg. You wouldn’t expect to find it between the touristic pizza places and bad clubs in the city centre, but this is a very cute movie theatre. Before you go to the movies, drink something at the bar, where you’ll be served by the (always) friendly staff. After that, you’ll walk to one of the cute movie rooms. In Cinecenter you’ll mostly see arthouse and foreign films. For a change, something other than The Hunger Games!

Have fun at these Movie theatres in Amsterdam!
