Checking-in: Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

48 hours in one of the best hotels in hong kong

Staying at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is something that has been on my travel bucketlist for years. Together with the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok this hotel in Hong Kong remains one of the founders of the luxurious hotels that can be found all around the world nowadays. A couple of years ago I went to the hotel in Bangkok for an afternoon tea and when I visited Hong Kong for the first time I had dinner at Amber**, that’s located in the adjacent The Landmark, which also belongs to this chain of hotels. And now I find myself here, in my room on the 20th floor with a fantastic view of Kowloon, Victoria Harbour and the ferris wheel at the Star Ferry. I pour myself another cup of Oolong tea that has been brought to my room as a welcoming drink and I let the view of the room sink in. Hong Kong will always remain an amazing city. With ancient and authentic, and new and trendy that live next to each other as two parallel worlds.

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

Iconic hotel in Hong Kong Central

The Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is a classic hotel and a true icon in the city. When the hotel opened its doors back in 1963 while still being called The Mandarin, it was located right by the harbour of Hong Kong. A while later the hotel collaborated with The Oriental in Bangkok and that meant the start of an empire of one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. I try to imagine how it must’ve looked like back in 1963. The Mandarin was the first hotel in Hong Kong where every room was provided with its own bathroom and it had a business centre. That the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is built on a location right next to the harbour is noticeable in all kinds of details in the hotel. On the ground floor, next to the entree, you’ll still find The Captains Bar where the captains of the arrived ships went out for a drink.

As what you would expect from a luxurious five star hotel like The Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong you can book several types of rooms here. From modernly decorated to very classic rooms and from suites with several rooms with a lovely kingsize bed and a marble tiled bathroom. During my stop over in Hong Kong I stayed in a Habour View Room. These rooms have a sleeping and working area that can be seperated by a curtain. The bathroom is provided with lovely beauty products by Hermès and there are soft bathrobes and silk kimonos to relax in.

breakfast at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

While I’m writing this blog I’ve just had breakfast and I’m lying on the sofa while enjoying the harbour view. We landed in Hong Kong as early as 6.30 in the morning with Cathay Pacific! Perfectly on time in order to enjoy the delicious breakfast in The Clipper Lounge at The Mandarin Oriental in the Central district. Now I’ve stayed in my fair share of hotels, but believe me when I say the breakfast at The Mandarin is absolutely amazing. A mix of Chinese and international dishes, an egg station where they prepare your eggs just the way you like it, a juice bar with several detox juices and a dim sum island. I’ve rarely had dim sum as delicious as they are at the breakfast of The Mandarin Hotel Oriental in Hong Kong. It instantly got me curious to the Cantonese restaurant Man Wah* that has earned a Michelin star and is located on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental.

During my stop over in Hong Kong I also had an extensive dinner at Pierre**. Curious as to what this special experience was like? Read the elaborate blog on Pierre** here >>

The Spa in the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

To counter the jetlag the spa and wellness of the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is a definitive recommendation. Hotel guests can use a dry and wet sauna and a lovely inside pool. Make sure to ask the lifeguard if he can put on the waves so you can swim against the flow. What makes the pool extra special for me is the relaxing music you hear when your under water. The hotel also has a large gym and several personal trainers, each with specific knowledge that can be hired during your stay.

At The Spa you can also book several beauty treatments to really come at ease. If you want to book an extensive beauty treatment, the Imperial Jade treatment would be my recommendation. Curious what my experience with this beauty treatment was like? Read the elaborate blog here >>
