Outlets in New York: Shopping for pro’s

19 November 2013

Outlets in New York can be a disaster or the best shopping experience ever.

Friends from home always ask me if I don’t get tired of all that shopping. Unfortunately I don’t go shopping a lot. Because, let me get this straight. YES, New York really is a shopping Walhalla. But NO, shopping here is not good for your savings account. Because fact is, that shopping here actually isn’t cheap (although everybody always seems to think that). So I’m going to give you some tips on where to find a good bang for your buck and that designer outfit you’ve been talking about for months now.

RESPECT to those who visit all of these stores and those who are really able to find that magnificent designer piece. We all know it takes courage, persistence and an eye for style to succeed. :)
And please! Share your wonderful (designer) items with us, just to show us how it should be done.

Here is an overview of New York’s best outlets. Plus an important tip at the end…

Century 21 – Outlets in New York

Location 1: 22 Cortlandt street, Financial District
Location 2: 1972 Broadway, Lincoln Square/Central Park West
Website: c21stores.com
What: Designer clothes, shoes, accessories. According to many it’s easier to score at the one at Cortlandt st.

Woodbury Common Premium Outlets – Outlets in New York

Location: 498 Red Apple Court, Central Valley, NY
Website: premiumoutlets.com
What: The best known brands (Nike, 7 For All Mankind, Chloe, Diesel, G-star, Gucci, Ted Baker) are located here. You have to take a bus (or car) to get here, which will take approximately 1,5 hours. To me this wasn’t the best outlet shopping (very disappointing).
Bus info (check them all, sometimes they offer a discount):
1. CitySights NY
Frequent daily bus service: Leaves from Port Authority, New York City (42nd St & Eighth Ave)
2. Grey Line New York: Leaves from New York’s Port Authority
3. Woodbury bus: Leaves from different hotels in Manhattan.

What: American Apparel but then way cheaper! Even cheaper than at the outlets like Woodbury. Yes, last season, but hey, lots of outfits are timeless.

Nordstrom Rack Union Square – Outlets in New York

Location: 60 East 14th street, Union Square
Website: nordstrom.com/nordstrom-rack

The tip I was telling you about

Now. These stores are great and all, but here’s some important advice. Subscribe to Racked New York newsletter (or have a look a the fantastic new Racked New York Sample Sale web page !) and The Stylish City newsletter so you’ll be on top of things in fashion like new stores, and most important SAMPLE SALES! I don’t go there often, because I just know I’ll end up wanting something. But what I bought I’m so happy with (beautiful blazers and pants for just a fraction of the price). So that’s definitely worth checking out before you make your trip to New York!
